Financial Advisor in Sherwood Park:Understanding Your Investment Statement & What CRM3 Total Cost Reporting Shows You

If you're searching for a financial advisor in Sherwood Park, there's a good chance it's because something on your latest investment statement didn't add up the way you expected. You're not alone. Starting with the 2026 annual statement (arriving in early 2027) every Canadian investor will see a clear, dollar-figure breakdown of what their investments actually cost, under a new disclosure rule called CRM3, or Total Cost Reporting (TCR).

At PAX Portfolio Advisory, we work with Sherwood Park and Edmonton families, retirees, and business owners to make sense of these numbers and to build fee-based portfolios designed to be more transparent and often more cost-efficient than typical mutual fund structures with more value-added services. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what's changing, what the numbers mean, and how our approach compares.

What Is CRM3 / Total Cost Reporting?

CRM3 (Client Relationship Model – Phase 3), also known as Total Cost Reporting, is a new disclosure requirement from the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). Data collection began January 1, 2026, and your first CRM3-enhanced statement will arrive in early 2027.

It's important to understand what this change is, and what it isn't:

  • It is a new way of reporting investment costs, in clear dollar amounts, not just percentages tucked into separate documents.
  • It is not a new or additional fee. The underlying costs of your investments are not changing.

In short: nothing about what you pay is changing. What's changing is how clearly, you can see it.

What's New on Your Statement

Previously, your annual statement (the Annual Report on Charges and Other Compensation, or ARCC) showed charges paid directly to your dealer and things like advisor compensation and transaction fees. What it didn't show clearly was the cost of actually running the investment fund itself.

Under CRM3, your statement will now include:

  • Fund Expense Ratio (FER): A new combined figure made up of the Management Expense Ratio (MER) and Trading Expense Ratio (TER) for each fund you hold.
  • Dollar-figure fund costs: The embedded costs of your mutual funds or ETFs, shown in actual dollars, not just a percentage.
  • Total cost of investing: A combined total of what you pay your advisor/dealer directly, plus the embedded fund costs, in one number.

A Quick Example

What Your Statement Shows Example on a $2,000,000 Fund Investment
Management Expense Ratio (MER) 2.00% → $40,000 per year
Trading Expense Ratio (TER) 0.24% → $4,800 per year
Fund Expense Ratio (FER) 2.24% → $44,800 per year

This $44,800 isn't a new charge, it's a cost that was already embedded in the fund's daily pricing. CRM3 simply makes it visible in dollars, alongside your advisor's compensation, on the same statement.

How Our Fee-Based Approach Compares to Typical Mutual Fund Costs

One of the most common questions we hear from Sherwood Park clients after reviewing their CRM3 statement is simple: "Am I paying more than I need to?" While every portfolio is different, it's worth understanding the two most common fee structures side by side.

Traditional Mutual Funds PAX Fee-Based Portfolio
Typical all-in cost Often approximately 2.0%–2.4% annually, depending on the fund and series Example: approximately 1.25% all-in on a $2,000,000 portfolio*
Fee visibility Costs largely embedded in fund pricing, historically less visible Advisory fee disclosed upfront, in writing, before you invest
Compensation structure May include embedded trailing commissions Fee based on assets managed, not product sold

*Fee example assumes a $2,000,000 portfolio with a 1.25% advisory fee and estimated underlying investment costs, for illustration only. Your actual fee and all-in cost depend on your portfolio size, composition, and account type, and will be confirmed in writing before you invest.

Lower cost doesn't automatically mean a better outcome, performance, service, and the quality of ongoing advice matter just as much as fees. But understanding the real, all-in cost of your current investments is the first step to deciding whether your current structure still makes sense.

Why Sherwood Park Families and Business Owners Choose PAX Portfolio Advisory

We're based right in Sherwood Park at 8005 Emerald Drive, Suite 828, and work with families, retirees, incorporated professionals, and business owners across Sherwood Park and Edmonton. As a Raymond James advisory team, we build fee-based portfolios rather than relying primarily on commission-based mutual funds, which means:

  • Your advisory fee is disclosed in writing, in dollars and as a percentage, before you invest
  • We are not limited to proprietary, in-house investment products
  • You get a clear answer, every year, to "what am I actually paying, and what am I getting for it?"

What This Means for the Advice You Receive

Cost is only one part of the picture. As your fee figures become more visible, it's worth stepping back and asking what that fee actually supports, because an investment relationship involves far more than fund selection. At PAX Portfolio Advisory, our role includes:

  • Building and maintaining a portfolio structured around your goals and risk tolerance
  • Retirement income, RRIF, CPP/OAS and tax-efficient withdrawal planning
  • Coordinated planning for incorporated professionals and business owners
  • Estate, survivor, and legacy planning coordinated with your accountant and lawyer
  • Ongoing reviews, behavioral coaching, and support through market volatility and life transitions

CRM3 is an opportunity to have a clearer conversation about value, not just cost. We welcome it.

Not Sure What You're Currently Paying?

We're happy to walk through your current statement with you — no cost, no obligation.

If you'd like a second opinion on your current investment statement, our Sherwood Park team can review it with you line by line and explain, in plain language, exactly what you're paying and what it includes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It's a new disclosure format only. The underlying costs of your investment funds are not changing, CRM3 simply reports them in dollar terms, alongside information that was already being disclosed under the earlier CRM2 rules.
  • Firms began tracking the required data on January 1, 2026. Your first statement reflects CRM3 disclosures, covering the 2026 calendar year, will arrive in early 2027.
  • CRM3 applies to mutual funds, ETFs, and segregated funds. Certain products, such as structured products and some private investments, are outside its scope.
  • Not necessarily. Cost is only one factor as performance, service, and the value of ongoing advice matter just as much. We're glad to walk through your specific statement with you so you can see exactly what you're paying for.
  • We believe transparency supports trust. Rather than waiting for clients to ask, we proactively review statements with our clients each year as part of our regular meetings, explaining fees, performance, and the full scope of the planning work behind them.
  • It depends on your portfolio size and the specific funds you hold, but fee-based accounts often have a lower all-in cost than traditional mutual funds once embedded fund costs are included, while also disclosing the advisory fee upfront in writing. We're happy to review your actual statement with you to compare the two for your specific situation.
